The Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe is a Group One race over 2400 metres at Longchamp in early October for 3-year-olds and above and is recognised as one of the top races in Europe. Although the 5 French Classics were initially restricted to French tarined and bred horses, the Societe d'Encouragement, the governing body of French Racing, launched the Grand Prix De Paris in 1863, opening it to horses from any country. A second high-profile race, the Prix du Conseil Municipal, was launced in 1893. After the end of the First World War, a third high-profile race was discussed on 24th January 1920 and it was decided that this third race would complement the other two and would be run on the first Sunday in October each year. To mark the liberation of France, it was named the Arc de Triomphe after the famous Parisien monument passed which the victory parade of the Allied troups marched in 1919. The inaugural running of the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe was staged on Sunday 3rd October 1920 and was won by Comrade, owned by Evremond de Saint-Alary, trained by Newmarket trainer Peter P Gilpin and ridden by English jockey Frank Bullock. Although the race did not take place in 1939 and 1940 due to the Second World War, it has been held every year since 1920. However, in 2016 and 2017 the race was transferred to Chantilly because Longchamp racecourse was being renovated. To date, 2024, 8 horses have won the race twice, starting in 1921 and 1922 when Ksar won for Mrs Edmond Blanc. In 1930 and 1932 Montrico won for Max de Rivaud, while in 1936 and 1937 Corrida won for famous French owner Marcel Boussac. After the War, in 1950 and 1951, Tantieme achieved back-to-back wins for Francois Dupre, while in 1955 and 1956 the great Ribot was successful for Mario Incisa Rocchetta. In 1977 and again in 1978 Robert Sangster and Vincent O'Brien teamed up to win with Alleged, while Treve was successful in 2013 and 2014 for owner Joaan Al Thani and his Al Shaqab racing team. Most recently, the filly Enable won in 2017 and 2018 when owned by Khalid Abdullah, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori.
